  • Angry Video Game Nerd - Love Him? Hate Him?

The Angry Video Game Nerd a.k.a. James Rolfe has been a small sensation for some time now. When I first saw his review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES a few summers ago I knew an Internet star was born. The simultaneous reverence and distrust of old Nintendo games, the scatological humor, the scathing insults, the attention to detail -- he hit all the right notes exposing an awful game I had a terrible time with when I was younger too. It was a nostalgic bonding moment and it hit right around the time hipsters and 20-somethings were busy dusting off their old systems to re-enjoy old games all over again ... only to find out maybe the nostalgia goggles were on a little too tight.

Some may say the AVGN goes after easy targets but the guys behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Rifftrax made tearing apart bad movies a veritable science, and he's followed suit with video games. Besides, there's nothing easy about subjecting yourself to the worst games in existence and many of them deserve a public tar-and-feathering. That AVGN's been doing it for, like, over 70 videos now is what surprises me. Who knew he'd be this successful, having already married his talents with GameTrailers.com and SpikeTV?

Cripes, I wish I had this idea a half-decade ago.

How do you find the AVGN? Favorite moments? Least favorite?

Does he do a good job eviscerating crappy old games or does his brand of poop-inspired humor-slash-criticism wear thin?
