  • Why Can't Mature Games Sell Well on the Wii?

Things have been rough for the hardcore Nintendo Wii owner in the past year or so. Since Smash Bros. Brawl there's been nothing to satiate them. Well, nothing except Sega-produced titles House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld... which nobody bought.

Yet according to GamesIndustry.biz, Sega still seems adamant about producing mature titles for the Wii, a system core gamers complain about for its overabundance of mini-game collections and licensed shovelware. Except they have no right to complain anymore when they don't buy the games that are clearly targeted for them!

It's a frustrating situation, one that echoes what happened to Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS, another mature title that did poor numbers.

Nintendo's always had a reputation for kid-friendly fare yet the Wii is singled out for being the most popular video game console in history. It hearkens back to the time when the NES was the cock of the walk and any awful publisher could put out a game for a quick buck, resulting in 90% of the system's library as unplayable garbage. What everyone seems to forget is that's the way it is with most consoles, heck, most media. A sea of junk with a few gems sticking out.

Regardless, this lack of concern for the core gamer - or for quality - was hinted at by Nintendo's shift towards more casual audiences and then cemented by Nintendo's 2008 E3 conference where they displayed a severe lack of anything interesting to anybody. To the puzzlement of many, Wii Music was what they played up the most and it ended flopping. Hard.

This past year's conference fared much better with the reveal of two new Mario games and a delicious-looking new Metroid game, as well as a slew of interesting DS games, all of which are almost guaranteed to do well in the market. Does that mean only Nintendo's first-party Wii titles are the ones that sell well? Why can't third-party "hardcore" stuff like MadWorld catch a break?

Myself, I've yet to even touch No More Heroes, and I still regularly play Mega Man 9. I also just started Klonoa, so I'm still fairly satisfied with the Wii. How about you?
